Witch Trials
Witch Trials
Currently in development, this powerful triple bill of world premieres is inspired by one of Jersey's darkest historical chapters - the island's notorious witch trials. Set against the ancient backdrop of La Hougue Bie, this innovative dance production brings together three internationally acclaimed choreographers to explore themes of fear, persecution, and resilience through abstract narrative and dynamic movement.
Uncovering Jersey's witch trial history
Between the 16th and 18th centuries, Jersey was gripped by accusations of witchcraft, leading to trials, imprisonments, and executions. These events were fueled by superstition, social tensions, and shifting political landscapes, leaving a lasting mark on the island's history.
However, the concept of witch hunts is not confined to the past. Around the world today, people still face public shaming, identity policing, and persecution for beliefs or behaviors that challenge societal norms. This production forces audiences to confront critical questions: Who decides truth? Who holds power to condemn? And how do fear and misinformation shape justice?
One of Europe’s most significant prehistoric sites, La Hougue Bie, serves as a symbolic performance space. With its layered history- from Neolithic ritual site to medieval chapel - this ancient setting offers a striking reminder of how myth, belief, and power have shaped societies for centuries.
Three visionary choreographers
Three cutting-edge choreographers bring unique artistic perspectives to this production, each offering a distinct interpretation of Jersey’s witch trials:
- Katya Bourvis: Known for her intricate and emotionally charged movement language, Katya delves into the psychological impact on those accused, exploring themes of fear, resilience, and defiance.
- Vidya Patel: With her background in Kathak, Vidya fuses rhythm, storytelling, and gesture to illuminate themes of belief, justice, and the divine feminine.
- Cecilia Lisa Eliceche: Rooted in decolonial and feminist perspectives, Cecilia interrogates the structures of power that enabled the trials, examining their relevance in today's world.
Guided by expert artistic consultation
The production benefits from the expertise of Dr. Adam Perchard, a Jersey-born artist and scholar, serving as artistic consultant. His knowledge of history, language, and performance ensures a rigorous yet poetic approach to storytelling, grounding the work in research while allowing for artistic reinterpretation.
