The Jersey Eisteddfod has unveiled the Valerie Guy Bursary, a new annual award scheme funded by a significant bequest from the late Valerie Guy, a renowned Island dance teacher. Miss Guy, who passed away in 2022 at the age of 101, dedicated her life to nurturing generations of dancers in Jersey.
The bursary offers up to £5,000 annually, with individual awards ranging from £100 to £1,000. These funds aim to support participants from any Eisteddfod discipline in advancing their talents through tuition, travel, equipment, or other resources.
Miss Guy, affectionately known for her dedication and high standards, began her dance journey at Jersey College for Girls and later ran the Jersey School of Dancing for over 74 years. Her legacy now continues through this initiative, providing opportunities for performers and artists to flourish.
Michael Blackie, Chair of the Jersey Eisteddfod, described Miss Guy's bequest as both unexpected and transformative. Her decades-long commitment to the arts and education continues to inspire, ensuring future generations can pursue their creative passions.
Whether your passion is for dance, music, drama, languages, visual arts, or any other discipline celebrated by the Jersey Eisteddfod, this Bursary is here to help you take the next step on your journey.
The Bursary is open to anyone who has competed in the Jersey Eisteddfod in the year of application. There are no age restrictions, and applicants must be residents of Jersey at the time of applying.
Applications are open until 31st December 2024. For further information, including how to apply, please visit this link.
