Their membership base includes both young and old people alike, whose interest in theatre is in both performing and helping backstage; there are also many members who simply enjoy the social aspect of the club. New Jersey Amateur Dramatic Club members are welcome to join at any time of the year. Putting on a show demands talent, both on- and off-stage, so they are always looking for new talent, including dancers!
The Jersey Amateur Dramatic Club (formerly the Amateur Dramatic Club) was formed in 1939 when a group of young men placed an advert in the Jersey Evening Post stating: "Any young ladies interested in a newly formed Dramatic Club, please enclose photo!". The Club flourished following the first production, "The Man who Stayed at Home", and plays were staged right through the Occupation, with rehearsals taking place in members' houses. In 1949, the Jersey Amateur Dramatic Club moved into their first club room near to where the Jersey Arts Centre is today, consistently staging one or two plays a year. When the lease ended, the Club continued to meet in members' houses until 1989 when they moved into a small theatre in Rouge Bouillon; at this point they branched out into musicals and pantomimes, as well as the traditional plays.
In 1997, the Jersey Amateur Dramatic Club decided it was time to find their own club room and purchased "The Barn", which was converted from old stables to provide 10,000 square feet with separate costume rooms, scenery dock and two large rehearsal rooms.
Today, the Jersey Amateur Dramatic Club present pantomimes, classical plays, comedies and musicals. They enter the Jersey Eisteddfod and arrange club night functions, whilst rehearsing and presenting up to five productions a year.
