About

SOMA Jersey invites practitioners interested in somatic practice from a range of backgrounds - Feldenkrais, Laban, Skinner Releasing Technique (SRT), Embodied Ballet (to name but a few!) - to run workshops in interesting spaces on the island.

A key prerequisite is that workshops are accessible to all regardless of movement experience. Discovering the joy of movement is at its heart.

Examples of workshops:

  • Space, dynamics, relationships - exploring Laban's principles through childlike play
  • Seeing with the whole self - a Feldenkrais ATM to uncover new ways to see art
  • Moving uniquely to you - attune your mind to your own individual movement patterns

Founder of SOMA Jersey, Emily Bartleman, discovered dance in her 30s while studying for an MA, immersing herself in the work of Rudolf Laban and Joan Skinner (SRT). A drama teacher by profession, Emily has had no professional dance experience or ballet training, and is uncomfortable with the concept of learning 'steps'. She believes passionately in everyone's innate capacity to move expressively and that discovering this is one of life's great joys.
